The port of Rotterdam has seen the throughput of bunkered liquefied natural gas (LNG) rise from 100 tons in 2016 to 1,500 tons in 2017.

The increase in LNG bunkers was mainly due to the Wes Amelie, the world’s first container ship that was converted to LNG propulsion. The vessel regularly bunkers at the City Terminal at the Prins Willem Alexanderhaven.

The port also said that Shell’s ocean-going bunker vessel Cardissa operates from the port of Rotterdam as its home port. The bunkering vessel supplies customers throughout Europe with LNG from the Gate terminal in Rotterdam.

It is also seen as a major step in the transition from fuel oil to LNG as fuel for shipping, which is in line with the port authority’s policy.

The port’s data also shows that the sales of bunker oil in the port of Rotterdam dropped from 10.1 million cubic meters in 2016 to 9.9 million cubic meters in 2017.
