Narón-headquartered Gabadi won a contract to build four membrane tanks of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks for a 22,000 TEU containership being built at the Chinese Jiangnan Shipyard.

The value of the contract is at $42.1 million and it is expected to be executed in one year and a half, the Spanish company said in a statement.

Gabadi’s Chinese unit, Gabadi Marine Engineering (Shanghai) will be in charge of the contract execution.

The company added in its statement that the 400 meters long and 60 meters wide containership will be the first of this size to use LNG as fuel.

The vessels are being developed with a view towards new emission regulations coming in into force in 2020, which will imply a compulsory use of alternative fuels with low sulfur levels.
