Bureau Veritas awarded the approval in principle (AiP) to the Japanese provider of offshore floating solutions, MODEC, for its new floating storage, regasification, water-desalination and power generation (FSRWP) concept.
According to MODEC, the FSRWP is the evolution of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with the addition of Water & Power.
As a new concept, the design is not covered by existing classification society rules but, MODEC and Bureau Veritas joined forces in finding the solution.
Bureau Veritas developed new approaches to classification for this vessel, based on risk mitigation around new technology and requirements.
MODEC notes that currently power and water solutions use LNG as a fuel source to provide power and water within 18 to 24 months of contract award, while temporary power solutions can be provided within 60 to 90 days, making the FSRWP concept more economical, faster and efficient than the conventional land-based solution.
