Crowley Maritime’s new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container/roll on-roll off ship Taíno has been christened in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Crowley Maritime said on Friday that Taíno was among the first of its kind to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), like its sister ship El Coquí, which entered service in 2018.
Both ships are 219.5 meters long, 26,500 deadweight tons, and able to transport up to 2,400 twenty-foot-equivalent container units at cruising speeds of greater than 22 knots.
Each ship also has enclosed, ventilated decks with a capacity for 400 cars and large vehicles.
Both ships were constructed at VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, with Crowley Solutions providing the construction management services.
