Russian giant Gazprom is set to develop a natural gas liquefaction facility in the Poronaysk district, a statement by the Sakhalin Region government says.

The facility would have the capacity to produce 100,000 tons of the chilled fuel on an annual basis.

Volumes of the chilled fuel would be provided to the Kuril Islands for power production and heating. The facility would also be located near the railway and highway infrastructure enabling delivery of LNG to remote areas.

Plans were unveiled during the meeting between Gazprom’s head Alexey Miller and the head of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko, however, no timeline has been given.

The statement reads that in the coming months the executive authorities and municipalities of the region will collect the data to form the basis for the adjustment of the gasification plan of the region.
